Outside of face-to-face interactions, video is the most compelling way to communicate and share information. With video, you can see the presenter’s expression and body language. You can visualize complex topics through the use of screencasts or live demonstrations. And when video is used as part of a learning curriculum, studies have shown that you’re more likely to remember the content afterward (Rusted & Coltheart).
One of the challenges of video, however, is that watching it is an inherently passive activity – it’s not interactive. This creates complexity for learning professionals and educators who create online training and courses, and who want to weave video together with quizzes and polls. Ideally, any instructor or learning technologist should be able to capture a high-quality video presentation or screencast using their laptop and a webcam, and then integrate it with a survey or test created in the e-learning authoring tool they’re already familiar with.
This was one of the goals Panopto set out to achieve when we added web page embedding to our online video editor. With web page embedding, anything that can be rendered in a web browser can be synchronized into any point within your videos. This enables instructors to incorporate graded assessments, freeform questions, and surveys directly into videos hosted in your Panopto video library, and accessed through your learning management system (LMS) or content management system (CMS).
The potential source of these assessments is as varied as the e-learning authoring tools and online survey tools available in the market today. These include Articulate, Adobe Captivate, Top Hat, SurveyMonkey, Zoomerang, Google Forms, and many more.
Articulate is one of the most well-known, widely-used e-learning authoring suites on the market, and the company’s Quizmaker ‘13 software makes it very easy to create and publish web-based assessments. So let’s look at an example of how you can embed a test created with Articulate Quizmaker into a Panopto video. Specifically, we’ll create a short, interactive video training session for medical professionals. The topic: bloodborne pathogens in the workplace.
To begin, we’ll create a short multi-question assessment in Quizmaker. The first question will be formatted as a simple “true/false” response, the second will be multiple-response selection, and the third will be an “image hotspot”, in which the user is asked to click on the appropriate point within an image.
Once the quiz is created, we’ll publish it to Articulate Online. Articulate Online is the company’s hosted service for storing e-learning content online and delivering it to employees or students from within a web browser. It integrates with all of the e-learning tools that comprise Articulate Studio, including Quizmaker.
After we’ve published the quiz, we’ll embed it into a training video presentation that we’ve recorded using Panopto:
Once we’ve clicked Save, Panopto will update our video so that, during playback, the video will pause at three minutes and the Articulate quiz will appear. Once the quiz is complete, playback can resume.
If you’re an instructional designer or elearning specialist looking to integrate high-quality video presentations into your organization’s e-learning content, or a professor looking to flip your classroom using a combination of instructional videos and interactive assessments, we’d love to find out more about your goals and see if Panopto’s video platform is a fit.
