## Overview

Canvas is a learning management system by Instructure used by higher education institutions to manage course delivery, learner assessment, and educational content.

Panopto’s native integration with Canvas connects video creation, delivery, and assessment directly to the LMS environment that faculty and students already use. The integration is built on LTI 1.3 with full Single Sign-On (SSO) support—so instructors and students access Panopto from within Canvas using their existing credentials, with no separate login required.

Every Canvas course is automatically paired with a corresponding Panopto folder, keeping content organized without manual setup. Instructors record, upload, and embed video from any Canvas content area—modules, pages, discussions, assignments, and quizzes—using the Panopto video button in the Rich Content Editor. Students view recordings, submit video assignments, and access course materials without leaving Canvas. Panopto inherits Canvas course roles and permissions automatically, so access control stays aligned with institutional policies without separate configuration in Panopto.

## Frequently asked questions

How does the Panopto Canvas integration work?Panopto integrates with Canvas via LTI 1.3, creating a direct connection between the two platforms so video creation, delivery, and assessment are available inside Canvas without requiring a separate login or application. Every Canvas course is automatically paired with a Panopto folder, and instructors access recording and management tools through the Panopto video button in the Canvas Rich Content Editor.

When a course is provisioned in Canvas, the corresponding Panopto folder is created automatically. Instructors embed video into any Canvas content area—modules, pages, discussions, assignments, and quizzes—from within Canvas. Students view, interact with, and submit video without leaving the LMS. Canvas course roles sync to Panopto automatically, so permissions are managed centrally through Canvas rather than configured separately.

How do instructors add Panopto video to a Canvas course?Instructors embed Panopto video into any Canvas content area using the Panopto video button in the Canvas Rich Content Editor (RCE). The button is available wherever the RCE appears in Canvas—pages, modules, assignments, discussions, and quizzes—so video can be added to any part of a course from within Canvas.

Instructors can also insert a video link directly into a Canvas module, or access and manage their Panopto content from within the course using the Panopto LTI tool. All of these workflows keep instructors inside Canvas throughout.

Can students submit video assignments through Canvas?Yes. Instructors create video assignment activities in Canvas, and students record or upload their submission through Panopto and submit it directly within the assignment. Submissions are stored in the course’s Panopto folder and associated with the correct assignment automatically.

Instructors review submissions within Panopto, and where Canvas grade passback is configured, grades can be passed from Panopto back to the Canvas gradebook. The full workflow—assignment creation, student submission, and instructor review—runs inside Canvas without requiring students to use a separate platform.

Does the Panopto Canvas integration support quizzes and gradebook reporting?Yes. Panopto’s in-video quizzes can be used as Canvas assignments, with quiz scores passing directly to the Canvas gradebook. Video completion percentage can also be used as a graded Canvas activity, giving instructors a way to assign and record credit for watching a recording.

Both workflows use Canvas’s native grade passback via LTI 1.3, so scores appear in the gradebook alongside other course grades without manual transfer. The specific setup steps for quiz reporting are covered in the support documentation linked on this page.

Does Panopto support institutions that need to add Canvas to multiple courses at once?Yes. Panopto supports batch course provisioning for Canvas, allowing administrators to provision Panopto folders across multiple Canvas courses at once rather than configuring each course individually. This is practical for institutions rolling out the integration at scale across departments or the full institution.

For institutions that prefer to add the integration selectively, Panopto can also be added to individual Canvas courses on a course-by-course basis. Both options are covered in the setup documentation linked on this page.

Does the Panopto Canvas integration work on mobile devices?Yes. Panopto video embedded in Canvas is accessible from any device, and students can record and submit video assignments using the Panopto mobile app for iOS and Android or directly in the browser via Panopto Capture. No desktop software is required for viewing or submitting.

For institutions where students access Canvas on mobile devices—through the Canvas Student app or a mobile browser—Panopto recordings are responsive and playback reliably across device types.
