## Overview

D2L Brightspace is a learning management system used by higher education institutions and corporate training programs to manage course delivery, learner assessment, and educational content.

Panopto’s native integration with D2L Brightspace connects video creation, delivery, and assessment directly to the LMS environment that faculty and students already use. The integration is built on LTI 1.3 with full Single Sign-On (SSO) support—so instructors access Panopto’s recording and management tools without leaving Brightspace, and students engage with video content inside the courses where they do the rest of their work.

Every Brightspace course is automatically paired with a corresponding Panopto folder, keeping content organized without manual setup. Instructors record, upload, and embed video from any content area or module. Students view lecture recordings, complete in-video quizzes, and submit video assignments—all within Brightspace. Quiz scores and video completion grades pass directly to the Brightspace gradebook.

Panopto inherits Brightspace’s course roles and permissions automatically, so access control stays aligned with institutional policies without requiring a separate configuration in Panopto.

## Frequently asked questions

How does the Panopto D2L Brightspace integration work?Panopto integrates with D2L Brightspace via LTI 1.3, creating a direct connection between the two platforms so video creation, delivery, and assessment are available inside Brightspace without a separate login. Every Brightspace course is automatically paired with a Panopto folder, and Brightspace course roles sync to Panopto automatically.

Instructors access Panopto’s recording and management tools from within Brightspace using the Panopto Insert Stuff tool, which is available wherever the Brightspace content editor appears. Students view recordings, complete in-video quizzes, and submit video assignments without leaving Brightspace.

How do instructors add Panopto video to a D2L Brightspace course?Instructors embed Panopto video into any Brightspace content area using the Panopto Insert Stuff tool, which is available in the Brightspace content editor across modules, discussions, assignments, and pages. Instructors browse their Panopto library, select a recording, and insert it directly into the content area without leaving Brightspace.

The Insert Stuff tool works for both LTI 1.3 and LTI 1.1 environments, though setup steps differ between the two. The relevant configuration guides are linked in the support documentation section on this page.

Does the Panopto D2L Brightspace integration support course copying?Yes. Panopto’s Course Copy v2 feature supports D2L Brightspace, allowing video content to carry across to new course folders when a course is provisioned from a Brightspace template. When a new course is created from an existing template, Panopto creates reference copies of the source course’s video content in the new course folder.

Copied content is cleared of prior student data—including notes, discussions, quiz results, and viewing statistics—so each new course section starts clean. The setup and usage guide for Course Copy v2 in D2L Brightspace is linked in the support documentation on this page.

Can Panopto quiz scores pass to the D2L Brightspace gradebook?Yes. Panopto in-video quiz scores can be reported directly to the D2L Brightspace gradebook when the gradebook integration is configured. Video completion percentage can also be passed as a grade item, giving instructors a way to assign and record credit for watching a recording.

Both quiz score reporting and video completion grade passback require specific configuration steps in Brightspace. The relevant setup guides for LTI 1.3 and LTI 1.1 environments are linked in the support documentation on this page.

How are permissions managed between Panopto and D2L Brightspace?Panopto inherits D2L Brightspace course roles automatically through the LTI integration, so access to video content is controlled by the roles already assigned in Brightspace—instructor, student, teaching assistant, and others as configured. Administrators manage permissions centrally through Brightspace rather than configuring access separately in Panopto.

When a user’s role changes in Brightspace—for example, when a student completes a course or a teaching assistant is removed—their Panopto access updates accordingly. User provisioning and deprovisioning are handled through the same identity workflows as the rest of the Brightspace environment.
