## Overview

Viz CaptureCast is a professional AV capture and streaming system from Vizrt that uses NDI (Network Device Interface) technology to capture, route, and distribute video over IP networks—without the physical cable connections required by traditional SDI or HDMI workflows. It is used in higher education, broadcast, and enterprise environments where multi-room or multi-source video capture needs to operate across a network infrastructure rather than dedicated AV cabling.

Panopto’s integration with Viz CaptureCast connects NDI-based capture directly to Panopto’s recording and publishing workflow through the Remote Recorder API. CaptureCast registers as a Panopto remote recorder, enabling scheduled recording, ad-hoc capture, and live streaming to be configured and managed through a web browser—without requiring device-specific software on each machine.

The integration supports true multi-room NDI workflows: separate video sources in different physical locations—such as a camera at the back of an auditorium and a presenter’s laptop on stage—can be synchronized and captured as a single production in the cloud, then streamed to a live audience, without physical connections between sources. CaptureCast’s Command Centre and Panopto’s Administrator Dashboard provide centralized AV room management across all connected spaces.

## Frequently asked questions

How does the Viz CaptureCast Panopto integration work?Viz CaptureCast registers with Panopto as a remote recorder through the Remote Recorder API, receiving recording schedules from Panopto and publishing captured content to the Panopto library automatically when a session ends. Configuration, scheduling, and recording management are handled through a web browser, making the workflow device-agnostic.

Setup guidance and virtual remote recorder configuration are covered in the support documentation linked on this page.

What is NDI and why does it matter for lecture capture and AV workflows?NDI (Network Device Interface) is a technology standard that enables video sources—cameras, laptops, and other devices—to send and receive high-quality video over a standard IP network, without requiring dedicated SDI or HDMI cabling between each source and the capture system. In practice, this means video sources in different rooms or locations on the same network can be captured and combined without physical cable runs between them.

For institutions deploying capture across multiple teaching spaces or large venues like auditoriums, NDI significantly reduces the infrastructure required to connect and synchronize multiple sources—lowering installation costs and enabling more flexible deployment configurations.

How does multi-room NDI capture work with Panopto?CaptureCast and Panopto together can synchronize separate NDI video sources located in different physical spaces—for example, a camera at the rear of an auditorium and a presenter’s laptop on stage—and capture both feeds simultaneously as a single production. The synchronization happens over the network rather than through physical AV connections, and the combined recording is published to Panopto where viewers can access it in the multi-source player.

This makes it practical to capture complex, multi-location productions that would require significant cabling infrastructure in a traditional SDI or HDMI workflow.

What are virtual remote recorders in the CaptureCast Panopto integration?Virtual remote recorders allow CaptureCast to register multiple logical recording instances with Panopto without requiring a dedicated physical recorder for each. This supports flexible deployment configurations where multiple rooms or capture contexts need to be managed independently within Panopto, without the hardware overhead of a separate physical remote recorder per space.

Configuration guidance for virtual remote recorders is linked in the support documentation on this page.

How does centralized AV management work across CaptureCast and Panopto?CaptureCast’s Command Centre provides centralized management of CaptureCast devices and NDI sources across the deployment. Combined with Panopto’s Administrator Dashboard, AV administrators have visibility across both the capture infrastructure and the Panopto recording and publishing workflow from a single management layer—without needing to access each room or device individually.

For institutions managing capture across multiple buildings or campuses, this centralized oversight reduces the operational burden of running and monitoring a distributed AV infrastructure.
