This Week In Ideas Shared With Panopto — January 16, 2015

It’s Oscars nominations week! If you missed all the drama, this year’s story lines were highlighted by the acclaim for favorites Birdman and The Grand Budapest Hotel, and controversy over the omission of the cast of critical favorite Selma in key categories.

The Academy Awards have become one of the world’s most talked-about annual cultural events in large part because they give us an opportunity to revel in the year’s greatest cinematic achievements. The Oscars allow us to bear witness to the power of film to educate and entertain in equal measures. Whether it’s facts in the documentaries, the stories in the dramas, or laughs in the animated features, film has since it’s very invention been a medium that connects over time and distance and communicates with a power unmatched by any written word.

Of course, most of us won’t have the opportunity to bring our ideas to the silver screen. But as ever more of us are learning, that doesn’t mean we can’t still take advantage of the medium to shine a little light on the information that matters most to us.

And today, presentation recording software like Panopto is lending a little movie magic to everyone — making memos into must-see features, classes into can’t-miss series, and live events into roles of a lifetime.

This week we saw more and more people taking advantage of video to share ideas, send messages, and make a statement. And in the spirit of passing it on, these are just a few of the ideas shared this week with Panopto.

Recent controversies have highlighted these different conceptions of academic freedom — and in his most recent book, Versions of Academic Freedom: From Professionalism to Revolution, professor Stanley Fish finds just about all of them wrongheaded. Join Cardozo Law School for this powerful panel discussion on academic freedom between Professor Stanley Fish; Lee Bollinger, President of Columbia University; and John Sexton, President of New York University.

Nursing Evolution - Panopto Video Presentation Recording Software

The “Habitus” of Nursing — Different By Degree?

Listen in as Dr Sally Hayes talks about Bordieu’s theory of socially constructed “lenses” on reality, and why she used it to inform the conceptual framework for her recently completed doctorate. Hayes’s research questions whether and how the move to an all-graduate profession will change nursing, and what implications that will have for the policy and direction of nursing as a profession.
