University of Arizona Selects Panopto as Campus-wide Video Platform, Captures Over 30,000 Hours of Lecture Recordings

SEATTLE, June 25, 2015 — This year, students at the University of Arizona spent more than a quarter million hours watching recorded lectures, flipped classroom videos, and other academic presentations. University faculty now produce two terabytes of video every week as part of the institution’s blended learning experience. To produce and manage this volume of video content, Arizona selected Panopto’s video platform for campus-wide deployment.

The Challenge: Standardize Lecture Capture Across a Campus of 42,000 Students

Like many institutions, the University of Arizona initially adopted lecture capture at a departmental level. This proved the potential of video technology as a valuable study aid. However, it required the university to maintain a variety of systems across campus, which created IT complexity and resulted in an inconsistent learning experience for students.

To simplify IT management and standardize the way that students consume online learning materials, the university sought a lecture capture solution that could scale to a single, campus-wide deployment.

The Solution: Panopto’s Video Platform and Exceptional Customer Support

After assessing a range of lecture capture solutions, the university selected Panopto for its software-based architecture and its ability to scale to the more than 500 lecture halls and classrooms across campus.

Panopto worked closely with the university on implementation, integrating the lecture recording software with each of the university’s learning management systems and optimizing network bandwidth utilization and video storage.

“With Panopto, we could use the computing and recording hardware we already had on campus to capture any kind of lecture, from formal classroom sessions to informal flipped classroom lessons or on-site demonstrations,” said Mark Felix, Director, Instructional Support at the University of Arizona Office of Instruction and Assessment. “What really impressed us, however, was the level of service we’ve experienced from the Panopto support team. They have exceeded our expectations at every level.”

The Next Step: Beyond Lecture Capture

Faculty at the University of Arizona have begun using Panopto for more than recorded lectures, capturing discussion sessions, lab demonstrations, on-site tours, flipped classroom presentations, and other educational content. With a standard set of lecture recording tools, students have benefited from a consistent learning experience in all of their classes, and IT management overhead has been dramatically reduced.

In the last year alone, faculty captured and shared nearly 30 thousand hours of recorded content with their students. Over the same period, students at Arizona watched nearly 270 thousand hours of video, studying for tests, reviewing concepts covered in class, and learning at a personalized pace.

“The University of Arizona exemplifies what’s possible when an institution embraces video as a core part of the student learning experience,” said Sean Gorman, COO, Panopto. “By using Panopto to share lecture recordings, flipped classroom lessons, and other academic content, the university has created an essential resource that can help improve student engagement, retention, and achievement.”
