Panopto Announces Support for 360-Degree and VR Video

Video platform leader also expands its inside-video search engine, adding support for eight new languages and two new captioning partners

SEATTLE, November 29, 2017 — Panopto today announced the latest update to its enterprise video platform. The release continues Panopto’s focus on delivering immersive video learning experiences through support for 360-degree and virtual reality (VR) video. Also included in the release is a major upgrade to Panopto’s inside-video search technology, Smart Search, which now supports speech recognition in 9 languages and integrates with captioning providers Rev.com and Verbit.ai.

Immersive Learning with 360-degree Video

In the last eighteen months, 360° video has gone mainstream in the consumer market. High-resolution 360° cameras and VR headsets are among the hottest holiday tech gifts for 2017, and consumer platforms like YouTube and Facebook support the upload and playback of 360-degree footage.

With today’s update, Panopto is bringing 360-degree video to businesses and universities around the world. The video platform now enables customers to upload footage from 360-degree cameras and watch it using the company’s updated video players as well as popular VR headsets like Google Cardboard, Oculus Rift, and Samsung Gear VR.

With support for 360-degree video and virtual reality headsets, Panopto enables businesses and universities to more easily simulate a real-world learning environment.

“When we originally designed Panopto, our goal was to provide people with an online learning experience that replicated the classroom environment,” said Eric Burns, co-founder and CEO of Panopto. “Support for VR video is the next logical step toward this vision, enabling people to actively explore and engage in their learning environment simply by tilting their phone or turning their head.”

Major Update to Inside-video Search Engine

Today’s release also includes a major update to Smart Search, Panopto’s inside-video search technology. Smart Search uses automatic speech recognition (ASR), optical character recognition (OCR), and optional human captioning to index every word spoken and shown within videos. This enables users to search across their video library in order to find and fast-forward to the precise moment a word was mentioned in any recording.

With today’s update, Smart Search now supports eight new languages in addition to English. These include Spanish, German, French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Dutch, and Polish.

In addition, Smart Search now integrates with captioning providers Rev.com and Verbit.ai. This continues Panopto’s commitment to enabling universities and businesses to achieve accessibility compliance. Rev.com and Verbit.ai join Panopto’s existing captioning partners, which include 3Play Media, cielo24, and Automatic Sync Technologies (AST).

Blackboard Gradebook Integration

Panopto has also updated its native integration with Blackboard’s LMS. Through this update, Blackboard customers can integrate Panopto’s video quizzes into their LMS as assignments, and access quiz results directly from within the LMS gradebook. This enables instructors to test comprehension and reinforce key concepts in their recorded lectures and flipped classroom videos, and then track student progress within the gradebook. Students can also see their Panopto quiz results from within Blackboard.
