Overview

Epiphan Video manufactures professional video capture hardware used in higher education classrooms, conference rooms, and enterprise spaces. Epiphan’s Pearl encoder lineup—Pearl Mini, Pearl-2, and Pearl Nexus—and the EC20 PTZ camera are certified for use with Panopto as remote recorders, providing organizations with a fully integrated hardware-to-platform capture workflow.

Epiphan Pearl encoders connect directly to Panopto as remote recorders, capturing multi-source video from room cameras, displays, microphones, and HDMI or SDI inputs, and publishing recordings to the Panopto library automatically. Recordings are transcoded for multi-device playback, indexed for intelligent search, and managed under the same access controls and retention policies that govern the rest of the organization’s video content.

The Epiphan EC20—the first PTZ camera certified as a Panopto remote recorder—extends capture to spaces where a dedicated encoder is impractical. A single Ethernet cable delivers power, network, Dante audio over IP, and direct streaming to Panopto. Institutions can deploy the EC20 in seminar rooms, simulation labs, and collaborative spaces alongside Pearl encoders in larger teaching spaces, under a single Panopto library.

Both Pearl encoders and the EC20 support scheduled recording through Panopto, remote management through Epiphan Edge, and integration with Crestron AV control systems where installed.

Frequently asked questions

How do Epiphan Pearl encoders work with Panopto?

Epiphan Pearl encoders are configured as Panopto remote recorders, connecting to Panopto over the network to receive recording schedules and publish captured content directly to the Panopto library. When a scheduled session begins, the Pearl captures video from the connected sources—cameras, displays, HDMI inputs, and audio—and uploads the recording to Panopto automatically when the session ends.

Setup documentation for Pearl and Pearl Nexus remote recorder configuration is linked in the support section on this page.

What is the Epiphan EC20 and how does it work with Panopto?

The EC20 is a 4K PTZ camera built for lecture capture that connects directly to Panopto as a remote recorder—without requiring a separate encoder. A single Ethernet cable carries power, network connectivity, Dante audio, and direct video streaming to Panopto. The EC20 is the first PTZ camera certified as a Panopto remote recorder, announced at Panopto Innovate EMEA 2026.

The camera features 20× optical zoom, AI auto-tracking with Presenter and Zone modes, and an integrated LCD screen for local setup. Panopto Remote Recorder integration is available as a firmware update. For institutions that want to extend capture to seminar rooms, simulation labs, and collaborative spaces, the EC20 provides a simpler deployment path than a full encoder setup.

Can Epiphan hardware capture multiple video sources simultaneously?

Yes. Pearl encoders support multi-source capture from cameras, displays, HDMI and SDI inputs, and professional audio—with all sources synchronized automatically for playback in Panopto’s multi-source video player. Viewers toggle between available streams and switch sources during playback without the recording requiring any manual synchronization work.

For institutions deploying lecture capture across classrooms with multiple camera angles, a presentation display, and room audio, Pearl encoders provide the input flexibility to capture everything in a single recording workflow.

How does Panopto support large-scale Epiphan deployments across a campus?

Epiphan Edge provides centralized remote management for Pearl and EC20 devices, allowing AV and IT teams to configure, monitor, and troubleshoot devices across the campus from a web browser—without on-site intervention for routine management tasks. Combined with Panopto’s scheduled recording and automatic publishing, devices operate consistently across every equipped space without requiring faculty involvement.

Northwestern University’s AV Systems team described the EC20’s integration with Panopto as a “‘set it and forget it’ lecture capture experience,” based on outcomes reported by Troy Powers, AV Systems Support Lead at Northwestern University. For institutions managing capture at scale, reducing per-room intervention is a meaningful operational advantage.

Does Epiphan hardware work with Crestron AV control systems?

Yes. Epiphan Pearl encoders are compatible with Crestron control systems through Crestron’s Control Module for Pearl devices. In classrooms already equipped with Crestron touchpanels, this allows room AV and Panopto recording to be managed from the same interface—without requiring separate control surfaces for the encoder and the room.

The Crestron integration for Panopto is documented separately on the Crestron integration page.
