Moodle
Learning Management System
Overview
Moodle is an open-source learning management system used by higher education institutions and corporate training programs worldwide to manage course delivery, learner assessment, and educational content.
Panopto’s native integration with Moodle connects video creation, delivery, and assessment directly to the LMS environment that faculty and students already use. The integration supports both LTI 1.3 and the Moodle plugin, with Single Sign-On (SSO) so instructors and students access Panopto from within Moodle using their existing credentials—no separate login required.
Every Moodle course is automatically paired with a corresponding Panopto folder, keeping content organized without manual setup. Instructors record, upload, and embed video from any content area, topic, forum, or assignment. Students view lecture recordings, submit video assignments, and access course materials without leaving Moodle. Panopto inherits Moodle course roles and permissions automatically, so access control stays aligned with institutional policies without separate configuration.

Frequently asked questions
How does the Panopto Moodle integration work?
Panopto integrates with Moodle through a combination of the Panopto plugin and LTI 1.3, creating a direct connection between the two platforms so video creation, delivery, and assignment workflows are available inside Moodle. Every Moodle course is automatically paired with a Panopto folder, and Moodle course roles sync to Panopto automatically.
The Panopto plugin adds a dedicated Panopto block to the Moodle course sidebar, giving instructors quick access to their course video library from within Moodle. The Panopto video button in the Moodle text editor allows instructors to embed video into any content area, topic, or discussion post without leaving Moodle.
How do instructors embed Panopto video into a Moodle course?
Instructors embed Panopto video into any Moodle content area using the Panopto video button in the Moodle text editor, which is available wherever the text editor appears in Moodle—topics, pages, forums, assignments, and resources. Instructors can browse and select from their Panopto library or upload new content directly from the embed interface.
Instructors can also access and manage their full Panopto course library through the Panopto block in the Moodle course sidebar. Both workflows keep instructors inside Moodle throughout.
Does the Panopto Moodle integration support both cloud-hosted and self-hosted Moodle installations?
Yes. The Panopto Moodle integration is compatible with both cloud-hosted and self-hosted (on-premises) Moodle installations. LTI 1.3 is the current recommended setup for cloud-hosted environments. LTI 1.1 links remain available for on-premises installations only, as a legacy option for institutions that have not yet migrated.
Institutions running self-hosted Moodle should review the LTI 1.1 setup documentation if they are not yet in a position to use LTI 1.3. The setup guides for both options are linked in the support documentation section on this page.
Can students submit video assignments in Moodle through Panopto?
Yes. Student video submission is supported for Moodle when enabled by the administrator. Once enabled, students can record or upload a video submission and submit it as part of a Moodle assignment activity through Panopto’s submission interface, without leaving Moodle.
Setup instructions for enabling student submission in Moodle are covered in the support documentation linked on this page. The student submission workflow for Moodle is also documented alongside equivalent workflows for D2L Brightspace and Blackboard Ultra.
Does Panopto’s folder structure mirror the Moodle course structure?
Yes. Panopto’s folder hierarchy mirrors the Moodle course structure, so the organization of video content in Panopto reflects how courses are organized in Moodle. When a Moodle course is created, a corresponding Panopto folder is provisioned automatically and linked to that course.
This means instructors don’t need to manually organize video content in Panopto to match their Moodle courses—the structure is maintained automatically. The LMS folder hierarchy documentation linked on this page covers how mirroring works across Moodle, Canvas, and D2L Brightspace.
