Overview

Cisco Webex is a video conferencing and collaboration platform used by organizations for meetings, webinars, and real-time communication. Webex includes meeting recording capabilities, but recordings are stored per user without the governance, search, or content management tools that organizations need to make recorded meetings useful at scale.

Panopto’s integration with Webex turns meeting recordings into a governed, searchable knowledge resource. When a Webex meeting is recorded, Panopto imports it automatically—processing, captioning, and indexing it for search within the organization’s secure video library. Once in Panopto, recordings are managed under the same access controls, retention policies, and audit logging that apply to all other organizational video content.

Beyond meeting capture, Panopto extends Webex with RTMP live streaming, allowing organizations to broadcast live Webex sessions to large internal or external audiences in real time. Recordings are captioned, indexed for intelligent search at the word level, and editable in the browser without additional software. Viewers collaborate asynchronously after the meeting ends using notes, comments, and bookmarks in the Panopto player.

Frequently asked questions

How does the Panopto Webex integration work?

When a Webex meeting is recorded, Panopto imports it automatically and publishes it to the designated folder in the Panopto library—where it is processed, captioned, and indexed for search. No manual upload is required; the recording moves from Webex to Panopto as part of the workflow.

Once in Panopto, recordings are governed by the same access controls, retention policies, and audit logging that apply to all other content in the library. Administrators configure folder mapping to control where different Webex recordings are organized in Panopto.

What happens to Webex recordings after they are imported into Panopto?

Webex recordings imported into Panopto are captioned and transcribed automatically, indexed for search at the word level, and organized in the designated Panopto folder. Recordings are set to private by default, with access controlled by the permissions on the folder they are filed in.

Recordings are no longer subject to Webex’s storage limits once they are in Panopto. They persist under Panopto’s retention policies for as long as those policies specify, and they are accessible on demand from any device to viewers with appropriate permissions.

Does the Panopto Webex integration support live streaming?

Yes. Panopto supports RTMP live streaming of Webex sessions, allowing organizations to broadcast live meetings and events to large internal or external audiences in real time. The recording is captured and published to Panopto automatically when the session ends, making it available on demand alongside the rest of the video library.

Setup guidance for webcasting with Webex and Panopto is linked in the support documentation on this page.

How does search work for Webex recordings in Panopto?

Panopto’s intelligent search indexes every word spoken and every word shown on screen in every Webex recording—including slides, shared documents, and whiteboards. Users search from within Panopto and jump directly to the specific moment in a recording where a topic was discussed, rather than watching an entire meeting from the beginning.

Smart chapters automatically generate a navigable table of contents for each recording, and a visual index of thumbnail previews lets viewers scan and jump to specific moments without searching. Both are generated automatically when a recording is processed.

Can Panopto recordings from Webex be edited before sharing?

Yes. Panopto’s browser-based editor lets users trim, cut, and update Webex recordings without downloading additional software. Edits are non-destructive—the original recording is always preserved and can be restored or re-edited. Editors can also add quizzes, attachments, and additional video clips to a Webex recording to extend its usefulness beyond a raw meeting capture.

For organizations that use video recordings for training purposes, quizzes added in Panopto can be routed to an LMS gradebook where the integration supports it.

How are Webex recordings governed and secured in Panopto?

All Webex recordings imported into Panopto are managed under role-based access controls, with recordings set to private by default. Single Sign-On (SSO) ensures employees access recordings using their existing organizational credentials. Audit logs track viewing at the user level, and retention policies can be configured to manage how long recordings are stored and when they are archived or deleted.

Viewer analytics show who watched which recordings, for how long, and where they dropped off—giving administrators and compliance teams the data they need without manual tracking.
